The congress, which draws together media leaders, journalists and editors from around the world, will take place at the Tivoli Congress Center.
“It is an honour for us to organise the 2024 Congress in partnership with Danske Medier. Denmark, as a role model for press freedom and human rights, embodies the values of WAN-IFRA. Denmark’s vibrant news media industry and deep-seated commitment to freedom of expression provide a roadmap for the global news industry, which has been buffeted by seismic shifts in media consumption and the move to digital. We are confident that the Copenhagen Congress will be a truly memorable experience,” said Vincent Peyrègne, WAN-IFRA CEO.
Mads Brandstrup, CEO of Danske Medier, said, “The Danish Media Association is extremely proud to host the World News Media Congress in Copenhagen in 2024. With the strong Danish tradition for press freedom, trust in the media and unique media pluralism, we look forward to facilitating the conversation about the future of the media in a digital age.
We must work to create a strong foundation for the media business worldwide, which is becoming more digital. The most important prerequisite for true independence is economic independence from state and private interests. The digital transformation and the battle against tech giants require an intense focus on innovative solutions in user experience, subscription types and advertising, especially with the fast-emerging challenges and possibilities from artificial intelligence which requires comprehensive regulation that guarantees real and fair competition”.
The World News Media Congress has been the annual meeting of news publishers, editors and owners worldwide since 1948. It is hosted in a different city each year. The 2022 Congress in Zaragoza drew more than 1,200 media professionals from over 75 countries for three days of conferences, executive meetings, networking, and social events.
This year the World News Media Congress will be held from the 28 – 30 June in Taipei, Taiwan.
The event will bring together some of the media industry’s sharpest, bravest and most innovative individuals, people from all continents who are redefining the news business and journalism as they seek a sustainable footing for media.
With over 50 speakers from six continents, headliners include Nobel Laureate and Rappler CEO, Maria Ressa, The Philippines; Joseph Kahn, Executive Editor of the New York Times, USA; Patrícia Campos Mello, journalist of Folha de S.Paulo, Brazil; Michael Miller, Chairman of News Corp, Australia; Styli Charalambous, CEO, Daily Maverick and Stig Ørskov, CEO, JP/Politiken Media Group, Denmark.
