An update on our work in support of colleagues in Ukraine:
Direct financial support
WAN-IFRA has so far raised over €170,000 through the ‘We, the media’ fund. Via member associations UAPP-UAMB and AIRPPU, the support has reached 150+ publications and news organisations and has contributed to maintaining salaries, providing funds for essential services, and keeping the media running and operational throughout Ukraine.

Newsprint
Thanks to our Norwegian member association MBL and supplier Norske Skog, a transfer of 48 tonnes of newsprint is in the process of being delivered to Ukraine.
Between an incredibly generous no-cost offer from the Norske Skog Skogn plant combined with additional funds from the ‘We, the media’ campaign, the Ukrainian regional press can be re-supplied with the essential raw materials of our trade.
Our colleagues at Agora have been instrumental in ensuring the import of the paper to Poland and coordinating its safe delivery and onward journey to Ukraine, in conjunction with our Ukrainian regional media association, AIRPPU.

Insurance
Contributions to the ‘We, the media’ campaign enabled WAN-IFRA to establish an insurance fund in conjunction with the team at Insurance for Local Media to cover local journalists working in extremely difficult and dangerous conditions.
The coverage brings peace of mind to journalists to be able to continue their reporting and provide the essential facts from the ground.

Offers of newsroom hosting
We would like to hear from you if the possibility of hosting displaced colleagues from both sides of this conflict is something your newsroom is in a position to assist with.
Our colleagues at the International Press Institute (IPI) are coordinating a Europe-wide response in support of exiled Russian and Ukrainian journalists, and WAN-IFRA members – who reacted so generously in support of displaced Afghan colleagues last year – are invited to contact us to discuss any offers of job hosting or work placement opportunities.
Solidarity makes all the difference
The incredible support received from WAN-IFRA members and partners shows the strength and depth of this industry’s capacity to work together to overcome threats to independent media.
Sadly, the conflict in Ukraine continues and looks set to extend beyond our current capacity to offer long-term support to our colleagues.
We urge those of you in a position to do so to contribute to our ‘We, the media’ fund so that we can extend the support outlined above and, importantly, prepare for the rebuilding that will be necessary when peace finally does come.
